Expressions - The Smile by MistyTang Expressions - The Smile by MistyTang
And there you go!
I hope all that makes sense. If you have any questions, I will do my best to answer.

Now, I could have gone on and on rambling about this stuff, but I'm not really sure what you guys want. Is this descriptive enough? Do you want more examples? Do you want it to be shorter and more succinct? Let me know!

Anyways, I may or may not continue this little tutorial series. It depends on how you guys respond to it. 'Cause if this isn't helpful at all, I'm not gonna bother making more. XD
So, let me know what y'all think!

Intro: The Frown:

I've kind of stopped making tutorials, because I discovered far superior ones to mine.
I highly recommend `alexds1's, *tracyjb's, and ~Coelasquid's tutorials. They are magnificent.

Pencil and some CG.

I love how you include the whole face, not just the mouth. :) This will be really helpful, I struggle with expressions.

Thank you! I'm glad you found it useful.
However, this tutorial is getting on in age, and there are better ones out there. I highly recommend `alexds1's, *tracyjb's, and ~Coelasquid's tutorials. They are magnificent.

I found this tutorial really, really helpful C:
I've been drawing for years and despite that I've just learned a lot! I'm all fire to get to practice what I've learn and if you keep them coming I'll be standing on the side clapping in joy of all my might ^^

Depending on how much more information you have, I think this was describing and explaining enough. I understood what you meant completely and using different characters as it gets more complicated is just lovely to witness :3
It's not weird you're such an amazing artist! Your work and spirit is inspiring for me to keep up improving : D

Misty, you are made of win. It's nice to have such a good reminder of all the things we draw and take for granted.

I occasionally do this odd smile where the corners of my lips turn down. My friends think my "sad little smile" is hilarious. 8D

It doesn't translate well to drawings though. x)

Aah, the sad smile. Yes, that one can be tricky--but it can be done! It's really subtle, so you have been careful when drawing it.

These are really, really good points to make. I mean, geez. I didn't really think about HALF of these things before. Sure, I might do a little with the cheeks, but never as much as here, much less with all the other parts of the face's muscle groups.

This is a good level of description for me, I think. :3 At least I don't have any immediate questions.

Half the job is observing, and discovering things! The rest, is of course, practice. :P

Thanks! I'm glad you got something outta this. :)

I'm finding this all very interesting. It's like... I knew about these things, but no one ever drew my attention to it so I was just lazy in my drawings. Thanks for making this!

Muscles push and fold and....

I was smiling and touching my face to see how muscles and skin reacted while reading this. Thanks a lot, my grandpa was watching. XD I find this helpful in seeing what has to be pointed out, what most people overlook, and whatnot, but not so much on applying it to an OC. I guess that part is my job, while yours is explaining. I really like how you explain this. It's not just, "LOOK AT EYEBROW NOW COPY". I hope these tutorials keep going.

I HAD NO IDEA I WAS SO IGNORANT. No wonder I can't draw expressions.

Haahah, thanks! I'm so glad you're getting something from all this. :^)
And yes, while I am willing to give a few pointers about character design, in the end, it's really up to you.

Well, to repeat an old cliche, practice makes perfect. :P
